International Day of UN Peacekeepers| 2020 Theme

"To honor the peacekeepers and to pay tribute to the  martyrs in the peacekeeping operations under the UN flag this day is celebrated as International Day of UN Peacekeepers. Those peacekeepers who are still working for this cause when Pandemic Covid-19 has taken whole world into it's claws."

International Day of UN Peacekeepers[29th May]


It was designated as International Day of UN peacekeepers on 29th May 1948. This is the date when first UN peacekeeping mission "United Nations Truce Supervision Organization" (UNTSO) began it's operation in Palestine.

This is the day to pay the tribute to the personnel  who are working for this mission with dedication, enormous determination, perseverance and courage, and commemorate those who sacrificed their life for peacekeeping.

Since it's Inception in 1948, 3900 people including civilians, Police and military personnel were died due to the unfortunate events like act of violence in addition to that diseases and accidents. They were died when serving for the cause of peace. Since 1948 over 1 million women and men have been served in 72 operations .

On 29th may, all UN offices and associated entities hold, organize the events to honor those martyrs who did not think for a once to sacrifice their life for the cause.

The activities and events includes:-

  • Wreath-laying ceremony by Secretary-general for all the martyrs who sacrificed themselves, serving under the UN flag at the UN Headquarters in New York.
  • Those who got martyrdom in the previous year during their service as peacekeepers are awarded with the Dag Hammarskjold Medal posthumously.
  • Wherever the UN peacekeepers are deputed to work, they utilize this day to bridge all the gaps and to strength their bonding with that local population.
  • They perform it by organizing sporting events, visiting the schools and orphanages, by organizing different competitions like painting, exhibitions, essay competition.
  •  The activities like cleaning up the locality, plantation of trees etc are organized for collaboration and mutual contribution.
  • Organizing the Concerts, conferences and workshops on peace issues are conducted on this day.

Women in Peacekeeping: A Key to Peace

The theme is taken to celebrate the 20th anniversary of adopting he  UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security .

This resolution was drafted to give women equal rights. The focus was on the well being of Women and girls. Few points I would like to discuss from this resolution are:-
1.   To increase their scope, their participation and their  involvement in building the peace so as to give gender equality.
2.     To empower them by giving the decision making right in preventing the conflicts.
3.      To take measures and making the laws on international level to protect the rights of women and girls during and forth of conflicts.
4.     It stresses on preventing the sexual and other crimes against women and girls by taking strong actions.

Women have been contributing greatly. Their involvement has been proved incredible. They are not only improving the performance but they are making aware women from diverse fields to be a part of peacekeeping and politics which will impact the overall result of peacekeeping when women from different fields will be involved in it.
